AI4CYBER is a European Union-funded research project dedicated to enhancing cybersecurity by leveraging artificial intelligence. Running from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2025, the project aims to develop an ecosystem of AI-based services to bolster the robustness, resilience, and autonomous response capabilities of critical systems against advanced and AI-powered cyberattacks.
Objectives of AI4CYBER
The primary objectives of AI4CYBER include:
- Smart Cybersecurity Ecosystem: Establish an ecosystem framework of next-generation trustworthy cybersecurity services that utilize AI and Big Data technologies. This framework supports system developers and operators in effectively managing robustness, resilience, and dynamic responses to advanced and AI-powered cyberattacks.
- New Breed of Cybersecurity Services: Deliver AI-driven software robustness and security testing services that facilitate the work of testing experts through smarter flaw identification and automated code fixing.
- Combat AI-Powered Attacks: Provide services for understanding, detecting, and analyzing AI-powered attacks to prepare critical systems to be resilient against them.
- Reduce Security Operators’ Workload: Offer mechanisms to optimize the orchestration of security protections, continuously learning from system status and defense efficiency, thereby offloading complex tasks from security operators.
- Trustworthy AI: Ensure AI4CYBER’s framework integrates demonstrable explainability, fairness, and technological robustness to align with European fundamental rights and values.
- Foster European Innovation: Promote open innovation and business opportunities by demonstrating AI4CYBER services integrated into critical use cases relevant to Europe.
Proposed Solutions
AI4CYBER is developing a suite of innovative resilience and autonomous response services that leverage AI models and Big Data. These services are encapsulated in cybersecurity tools to ensure continuous system protection. The project focuses on defensive AI, developing services to detect and respond to advanced and AI-powered attacks, as well as services for code testing with smarter flaw identification and automated code fixing. Validation of AI4CYBER solutions targets three key sectors: energy, banking, and hospital services.
Tools Developed in AI4CYBER
The project encompasses several AI-driven tools and services.
Like tools for code testing, an open-source solution for automatic identification and verification of code vulnerabilities and weaknesses, achieving higher accuracy rates than existing solutions by applying symbolic execution and AI for scalability. An open-source end-to-end vulnerability fixing solution supporting Java, providing automatic unit testing of proposed fixes, enabling earlier vulnerability resolution in the software development flow, thus saving development time and rework. A high-performance solution for detecting advanced and AI-powered attacks in distributed environments, ensuring privacy of data processed by detection agents. An advanced cyberattack simulation solution capable of emulating sophisticated and AI-powered attacks against IT, OT, and IoT systems, tailored to customer needs. An AI-powered solution capable of deploying multiple security controls across different system layers to effectively react to cyber incidents and attacks.
Moreover a set of innovative methods and models ensuring the trustworthiness of AI systems.
